Because….

…every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS. And every 90 minutes, someone dies as a result of this debilitating disease.

…the ALS Association empowers people with the disease, and their families, to live fuller lives. And they lead the fight for the cure.

…we know the power of the Internet and Social Media to spread knowledge, care and compassion is truly world-changing.

Because when human beings collectively focus their energy, they can accomplish miraculous things
…like cure disease.

Our Story

The family of Bill Emerson, our beloved CEO at Quicken Loans, felt the devastating effects of ALS when he lost his brother-in law to the disease in 2008.

Bill, a Penn State alum and former running back for the Penn State Nittany Lions, had another personal encounter with ALS when he recently learned his friend and Penn State teammate Steve Smith – formerly of the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks – received the diagnosis.

Now the Corporate Chairman of the Walk to Defeat ALS in metro Detroit, Bill has inspired and challenged us to make a difference in the lives of people with ALS.

We’ve decided to take Bill’s challenge to the Internet, and use the power of Social Media like Twitter, Facebook and blogs to take the drive national … and maybe even global. We’re counting on millions of social media users to spread the word and drive at least $10,000 in donations.

The idea of using social media to drive social good isn’t new, but the TweetForAls.com  team added a new twist to social media fundraising by encouraging people to reach the collective goal with 10,000 individual $1 donations. Also known as “micro-payments” or “long-tail fundraising,” the idea is that the sum is greater than the parts, and many small donations can add up to large, meaningful amounts that can make a major impact.
